Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, more popularly known as the LAP Band, is the second most used weight loss surgery. It is much less invasive than a gastric bypass, and costs an average of $14,000, which is $6,000 less than a gastric bypass. It can be reversed if necessary.
As the name suggests, it is mostly done laparoscopicly. There has been an estimated 65% loss in excess weight over one year, and a 70% loss in two. Although it does not cause as much loss as a gastric band, it is still extremely effective and can be removed. Patients can lose weight for up to 3 years, and on average lose from up to one-third to one-half of their extra weight.
This surgery does not involve any cutting or stapling of the intestines, and the band can be adjusted to each patient's unique needs.
